Can you turn off Windows telemetry? What you can really do
“Turn telemetry off completely” is one of the most popular optimizer promises. On regular editions of Windows it is not possible, but some things really can be limited. A calm look at what works.
What Windows telemetry is
Telemetry is the diagnostic data Windows sends to Microsoft: information about the device, errors, crashes and how updates are going. Windows has two levels: “Required” and “Optional” diagnostic data. The required level is always sent — it cannot be turned off on Home and Pro: only Enterprise and Education editions allow switching it off entirely.
What you can really do
- Keep only required data. Less optional data goes to Microsoft, while updates and protection keep working. It is set through a group policy, so Settings may say that some settings are managed by your organization — that is expected.
- Turn off tailored experiences. Microsoft will not use your diagnostic data for personal offers.
- Turn off the advertising ID. Apps no longer get your advertising ID. You won't see fewer ads, but they will be less personalized.
- Stop feedback requests. The “Rate Windows” prompts go away.
What about disabling the telemetry service?
You can disable the DiagTrack service, which collects and sends diagnostic data. The performance effect is small, and the troubleshooters and some Diagnostics & feedback features may work worse. That is why NyxBoost lists it as optional, not as a recommendation.
What not to do
Don't block Microsoft's servers in the hosts file and don't remove system components: it is easy to break Windows Update and protection that way, and they matter more than a few kilobytes of diagnostics. A good rule: change only what can be undone with one click. In NyxBoost each of these changes is shown in advance with all its registry values and can be reverted in Recovery.
